Why I Chose to Study History

Hi, I am Dainey and I am a second-year History student from London! When researching universities, Manchester stood out to me due to their diverse range of history modules, covering almost everything from Ancient Rome to Modern Britain. The wide array of options was reassuring, especially since I wasn’t sure if I wanted to maintain specific historical focus. It meant I could explore different periods and get a comprehensive understanding of the historical timeline. Even if you have a particular interest, the variety of modules allow you to gain a broader perspective.

In your first year, you are automatically enrolled in the History in Practice module, focusing on vital skills like analysing historical documents and help in improving your essay writing. This transitioned my writing from A-Level style to a more scholarly format. You’ll also choose five modules across both semesters, each with accompanying seminars. This structure continues into the second year. By the third year, the Dissertation becomes a focus—initially daunting, but Manchester offers robust support throughout. Academic advisors maintain regular communication, and there’s flexibility to choose additional course units, for example, I am doing a Religious Studies module. Manchester’s extensive options, including language courses and study abroad opportunities, provide a refreshing range of academic choices.

My favourite module so far has been ‘Living and Dying in the Ancient World.’ We explored various aspects of Ancient Rome, including significant events like the destruction of Pompeii and the architectural marvels of Roman amphitheatres. One particularly interesting aspect was studying ancient architectural diagrams of the city, which offered unique insights into their urban planning. We also had the opportunity to go on a class field trip to Chester, where we examined the remains of ancient civilisations. This firsthand experience allowed us to connect with history in a tangible way, and it significantly enriched our understanding of the course material. Also, the Manchester rain made it even more memorable!

Student life in Manchester is definitely lively. There are so many ways to make friends outside your course, for example, joining societies whether you’re into sports or history. There are many options to eat with Fat Pats being a favourite. For night owls and social butterflies, the nightlife is a definite highlight. Don’t miss the opportunity to make friends!

Considering studying History in Manchester? I highly recommend it. The city offers abundant in-person resources for research such as the Manchester Museum on campus and the John Rylands Research Institute right in the city centre. As Manchester is such a vibrant city, you’ll be able to break free from your shell and learn more about yourself, it’s an enriching experience that goes beyond academics, allowing you to explore and learn about both history and yourself.
