Student support and wellbeing are important aspects of the settling-in process at University and dealing with the stress of student life. Here at The University of Manchester, there are several options available provided by the University where you can seek support and guidance.

The University offers a range of student support services through the School Support staff, the Counselling Service, the Student’s Union Advice service and DASS. Support can take place in many forms, allowing you to choose what best suits your needs. You can arrange a Zoom or face-to-face appointment with a well-being advisor or use the live chat service to talk to one of them. As well as offering direct support, they can also help you to navigate other services and access workshops that they feel may help you.

Furthermore, the University recognises that some student groups may need specific support during their time at university. If you visit the University student support website, you can see and access tailored support for one or multiple groups you may belong to. For example, if you are a BAME, Commuter, Disabled, International, LGBTQ+ or Mature student, plus many more.

If you feel that your well-being or stress is related to your studies and exams, you may wish to discuss this with your academic advisor, who should be able to offer you advice and guidance on the matter. Your academic advisor will be there throughout your university journey, so it is important to utilise them whilst you can by discussing any achievements or struggles you may be going through.

Other aspects play an important part in student wellbeing, notably your health and fitness. Maintaining good health and fitness is not only important for keeping fit but studies show it can also improve your mood, enable you to sleep better and have more energy. The University has a range of sports facilities, teams and societies that you can utilise for this, which also allows you to maintain a good work-life balance by meeting people and socialising through sports activities. If you would prefer to join a gym, there are a variety of local gyms in the Fallowfield and Manchester City Centre areas that offer discounted memberships for students.

Finally, it is important to keep family and friends aware of how you’re feeling. Speaking to the people who know you best is essential, and you may even find that many of your friends feel the same way as you do. Having someone to share your problems with and relate to often reduces the problem. Besides, it is important to have fun and spend time with your family and friends during university. The University does not only want you to focus on your studies but enjoy your time here in Manchester. One way to maintain a good lifestyle and achieve any targets you may have is by establishing a good routine involving studying, self-care time, taking part in activities and socialising. This should enable you to break down your tasks so you become less overwhelmed and find coping mechanisms that work for you.
