What to Expect When Studying BSc Business Accounting at Manchester
Here at The University of Manchester, you’ll have a variety of course modules within the BSc Business Accounting course; from finance modules (e.g. financial reporting, principles of taxation), statistics modules that help you to become a whizz with numbers, to learning about the law as well as the modern-day economy and the astounding world of audit and assurance. Joining the BSc Business Accounting course (or Flying Start Degree Apprenticeship) has meant that before going on placements and into the world of work, I can truly experience the thrill of university life: making new friends, exploring new opportunities through societies and events as well as focusing on my academia before applying it to the context of the real world in later years.
The BSc Business Accounting course is 4 years long and is hybrid between university study and working in the PwC offices, with the entire first year at university. The gradual introduction to work is very good as it gives you the chance to first enjoy being a university student, before slowly taking on the responsibilities of working. PwC supports you throughout the course, in terms of choosing which office to go to for your placement, helping you adjust to the work environment and the pace of work etc.
I chose to study at The University of Manchester as it has a diverse and inclusive culture, which is really important to me, and a variety of fun-filled societies and events: from cultural and sports societies to quirky, unique societies like hummus society! Furthermore, they heavily focus on providing support to their students, through academic advisors, help sessions and peer mentors; this really helped to make me feel calm and welcome, as joining university can be a daunting experience. I felt that once I joined, I will be well looked after.
Moreover, as a commuter, I find The University of Manchester to be a top choice in terms of travel as there are many public transport options (e.g. train, tram, bus etc.) which are readily available and all within reasonable distance from the University and are easy to understand and use.
Another factor that appeals to me is the range of study spaces available to us students: exam season can be pretty stressful and the last thing you want to do is procrastinate! However, going in to study can be highly motivating as there are different options available depending on how you study: if you’re a “head down, headphones on, notebook out” kind of person, then try the Main Library. Are you the kind of person to “have a cheeky snack and study” or go along for a “group study session”? Then maybe the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) building is the place to be productive. If you’re looking for a “no-pressure, chill study session” place, then maybe the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons is the vibe.
Everyone, students and staff alike, are all friendly and there are always events going on throughout the year which you can attend and have fun with your friends, whether that’s staying in for a film or going out together for karaoke, which altogether has made my student experience at The University of Manchester so far to be eye-opening.
