Somrutai Reantragoon – MSc Marketing 2024 – Alumni Profile
A brief overview of your background before joining the programme
My undergraduate background is in cultural studies with a minor in Spanish. Prior to joining the MSc Marketing programme at AMBS, I had over 4 years of work experience in corporate communications in B2B and B2C companies in the fashion and oil & gas industries in Thailand.
Why you chose MSc Marketing at The University of Manchester?
I chose this programme based on three factors: (1) ranking, (2) societies, (2) location. It is undeniable that ranking is the most crucial factor considered as education is an investment. Compared to other universities in the UK that offer MSc Marketing-related programmes, the MSc Marketing programme at AMBS is high-ranked (according to rankers like QS, the Guardian, etc.). Another factor is societies on campus. UoM is one of the universities with the most societies in the UK. So, before coming to Manchester, I looked up on the UoM Students’ Union societies page to see whether there are any societies that match my interests and hobbies. Last but not least, location. I specifically chose UoM because it is not located in London, yet still have the best of both campus and city lives (i.e., concerts, plays, pub crawls, and hiking), whilst still being a tad more cost-efficient compared to going to universities in London.
Memorable experiences or key takeaways from your time here
Aside from people from my MSc Marketing cohort of 100 people from diverse background and nationalities, one of the best memories of my time at UoM is joining MUBS (Manchester University Barbershop Singers). They are the youth barbershop-style chorus based in Manchester with weekly practice once a week at the Students’ Union. They are inclusive, diverse, and fun group of people to be friends and hang out with. The weekly choir practices followed by karaoke/quizioke nights, pub crawls, and a trip to Pizza Co at 2am on a weekly basis had made my time in Manchester during term time quite eventful. Musically-wise, I learned new singing techniques from the choir, performed at MUBS own showcase at Niamos in Hulme, and had a few opportunities to compete, as a choir, at MACC (Manchester Annual Choral Competition) at RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music) in early March and at BABS (the British Association of Barbershop Singers) in Harrogate during the bank holiday in late May.
Your career development or current role since graduating
My career is still in communications. My current role is at Deloitte Thailand, working in the marketing communications – and working cross-functionally within different business units in Thailand, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
How the course supported your career development?
The MSc Marketing course has equipped me with overall knowledge crucially for marketing-related roles. The assignments and group business consultancy project with Procter & Gamble (P&G) Europe in semester 3 really helped with sharpening my marketing skills in analysing companies in different industries and countries and more importantly, turning the analysis into concrete and practical recommendations for better marketing campaigns and approaches.
Any advice you would offer to future applicants?
Although the programme is quite intensive as each module has extensive required readings and assignments, if you manage your time properly, you will be able to enjoy all the things Manchester has to offer: school, leisure, and nightlife. As Manchester is a diverse city, chances are there is an opportunity to meet and learn from people with different backgrounds from all over the world.
