Hello, my name is Sofia, and I am originally from a small town near Milan, Italy. Before joining Alliance Manchester Business School, I studied International Hospitality Management in beautiful Scotland.

I decided to pursue the MSc in Business Analysis and Strategic Management at The University of Manchester because I knew it would be a crucial stepping stone toward my goal of working in consultancy within the hospitality and real estate sectors. AMBS stood out to me for its strong international reputation, extensive industry connections, and, in particular, the client-facing project that replaces a traditional dissertation. This hands on experience was a unique opportunity to work directly with real organisations, applying the theories and frameworks learned in class to practical, real world challenges.

Some of my favourite memories from my time at AMBS come from the friendships I formed. I had the joy of being part of an incredible group of nine girls from eight different nationalities. These friendships became one of the most meaningful aspects of my experience.

My key takeaway for anyone joining the programme is this: be open, be friendly, and don’t be afraid to connect with others. The people you meet will shape your experience as much as the academic journey itself. AMBS offers a wonderfully diverse environment, embrace it, and allow it to enrich both your personal and professional growth.

While completing my Master’s, I was very proactive in applying for graduate schemes across the UK, programmes designed to introduce young graduates to professional corporate environments. I was thrilled to be accepted onto one at Turner & Townsend, a global consultancy specialising in project and programme management for real estate, infrastructure, and natural resources. I joined their Sustainability team, where I began by shadowing senior colleagues, learning how projects are structured, and understanding the needs of both public and private sector clients. Over time, I grew into more responsibility, managing workstreams, supporting the delivery of major initiatives, and working directly with high-profile clients.

My Master’s degree played a significant role in shaping the professional I am today. It trained me to approach problems analytically, challenge assumptions, and, most importantly, to ask the right questions. Consulting is ultimately about understanding what a client truly needs, not just what they initially ask for. The ability to analyse situations critically, respond strategically, and communicate clearly has proven invaluable in my work. The international exposure, teamwork dynamics, and experience gained through the client-facing project at AMBS all helped me transition smoothly into a consultancy role.

To future applicants, my advice is simple: say yes. Be present, take advantage of every opportunity, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. This is the perfect time to try new things, make mistakes, learn rapidly, and discover who you want to become. The more you engage with the experience, academically, socially, and professionally, the more you will gain from it.

I wish you every success in your future journey, and I can confidently say that AMBS is a place where you will grow, challenge yourself, and build lasting memories.
