As part of the International Day of Immunology 2023 campaign our Director Professor Tracy Hussell spoke to the European Federation of Immunological Sciences to explain how vaccines work and their impact on public health.

Vaccines work because they mimic the pathogen that you’re trying to protect yourself against.

 

So they contain little copies of the pathogen that when injected into the body you mount an immune response to it so that when you get infected later on with the pathogen, your immunity is already trained to fight it off.
