Year 5 GP block: Student Assistantship

Year 5 students are making the transition from medical student to foundation doctor. They need to consider how they will manage patients, interact with staff and the public and make some firm career plans.

General practice is an important career choice for students. This attachment with you offers them an excellent opportunity to address their learning needs and plan for their futures post-graduation.

What the placement involves

29 hours per week (Long/short days), between 7am – 9pm, Monday to Sunday.

Year 5 follows a student assistantship model in preparation for foundation training.

Your close supervision is essential to support students to develop the skills needed to consult independently and progress to F1.

Students become part of your team and benefit from ample feedback on their presentations, differentials and management plans. They will document in the notes, arrange & review investigations, draft referral letters and prescribe under supervision. They will also complete a practice referral letter as part of their placement.

Students will write a 300-350 word reflective piece describing how the placement has helped them prepare for Foundation training.

“Best placement I’ve had in medical school. Dr H. is an amazing supervisor who taught me lots and supported me so well, the same goes for Dr Y. The whole team at the practice is amazing and so friendly. I definitely grew in my confidence in assessing and managing patients in a primary care setting…”
