This semester, the Doubleday Conversational Series brought students and staff together for two powerful conversations with national leaders whose work continues to shape patient safety and public accountability in England.

Dr Henrietta Hughes: Improving patient safety through partnership

In February, we welcomed Dr Henrietta Hughes, the first Patient Safety Commissioner for England, who spoke about working in partnership to improve patient safety. Her discussion emphasised the importance of listening to patients, building trust and creating systems that respond to real experiences – themes that resonated strongly across our community.

Sir Robert Francis KC: Learning from the infected blood scandal

In May, we were joined by Sir Robert Francis KC, who explored the lessons of the infected blood scandal. A longstanding friend of the Doubleday Centre since delivering the Doubleday Lecture in 2014, Sir Robert reflected on the human impact of institutional failures and the essential role of patient voices in shaping safer, more accountable services.

Together, these sessions reinforced a shared message: healthcare improves when patients are partners. We look forward to continuing these vital conversations next semester.
