In November 2018, the research team visited two inhabited islands in North Malé Atoll to learn more about people’s everyday lives, particularly in relation to tuna fishing.

On many islands, although fishing is not a commonplaces as it once was, the practice is still central to the economic, social and cultural dimensions of people’s lives.

During our visit, the team were invited onto a fishing vessel that had just returned to port after two days at sea. The deck of the boat was a hive of activity, with men chatting, sweeping, cleaning, shovelling ice and preparing fish. It was a remarkable experience to witness the ease and skill with which the 13 crew members went about their work over such a small space.
