All of our subject areas have a dedicated society and some have Facebook groups and blogs of their own so you can keep in the know about the latest social events. We’ve summarised some of the societies below to get you started!

ArchSoc is a society for everyone who’s interested in archaeology, both students and the community. The society hosts social events, archaeology-themed activities and evening lectures, and offer a vibrant, social society that brings together students to get to know each other, and have fun.

Run by our students but open to all, the Art History Society is a great way to socialise and enjoy art history outside the classroom. With exciting events, trips, talks, quizzes and gallery visits, the society has something for everybody. Engaging with Manchester’s lively art scene, and also the cultural life of the North West, our students get involved in a variety of activities and show how to experience art history beyond the university.

The Chinese Society provide the opportunity for Chinese students to meet and socialise with students from the across the UK and all over the world. Our society includes those studying Chinese Studies at the University of Manchester, arranging study sessions and language exchange for Chinese students wanting to learn English, and other students to learn and practise Chinese!

The Classics and Ancient History Society provides networking opportunities and supports new students in their first year. It also arranges trips to plays, as well as an annual ball.

The Creative Writing Society is open to all students who enjoy writing or simply want to give it a try. They run fun workshops at least once a month, such as feedback sessions, writing together and experimenting with different styles. They also try to vary their socials between a relaxed night in the pub and alcohol friendly and daytime socials too.

The Drama Society brings student actors, writers, directors, producers and creatives together across the University of Manchester and the Manchester Metropolitan University to create some of Manchester’s most vibrant fringe theatre.

The (French) Francophone Society reunites francophone students from across the world as well as students who are simply interested in the French language and cultures. Our aim is to provide an environment in which members can meet, develop friendships and enjoy the different cultures surrounding the French language.

The German Society celebrates German culture and language and increases interaction between students through social events and informal meetings.  You don’t have to study or speak German to join.

The History Society plays a key role in building a community amongst History students at Manchester, organising trips in the UK and on the continent, organising social events and coordinating the student magazine, The Manchester Historian.

The Italian Society is formed by Italians studying at the Manchester University, Erasmus students coming from Italian Universities, English and international students belonging to the Italian Language Department and all those people within the University interested in the Italian culture, traditions and costumes.  Thanks to the great enthusiasm built around this Society, they are able to offer many events including a weekly breakfast on Campus!

The Japanese Society is a cultural society that aims to bring native Japanese students together with non-Japanese in order to help and share Japanese language and culture. Anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture is welcome. They organise regular events such as  clubbing, language exchange, Japanese lessons, etc. They also organise some Japanese seasonal events.

The Music Society has over 700 members,  is one of the most active student-run music societies in the country, offering a huge range of musical and work experience opportunities.

 

 

 

 

Russian Society logo

Russian Society

The Russian Society is for all students currently enrolled on a degree programme where Russian is one of their subjects, either fully or jointly. Within the society we aim to support and integrate First years to university life and all of the challenges that this brings along. As well as providing a base for inter-year relationships between 1st/2nd/4th years. This is achieved by a variety of social events such as Russian tailored evenings; e.g. to Russian restaurants, and Russian cookery, pub crawls, quizzes, curry nights, film nights and a whole range of other evenings to provide fun and a bit of stress relief from challenging degrees. 

 

 

SPLASSS Society

The Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies Student Society (SPLASS) was created to further Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American skills, to represent SPLASSS students in the university and the community and to encourage SPLASSS students to socialise and meet new people through attending SPLASSS related events.
