Getting Part-Time Jobs:
There are plenty of resources available to help you find part-time jobs, whether you are looking for roles within the Student Union, ambassador positions in your department, or off-campus opportunities. The university has compiled a handy list of resources to help you get started: Find Part-Time Jobs.
And don’t forget to keep an eye on the newsletters from your department – they often include part-time job openings. Another great tip? Check out the notice boards in university buildings for one-off gigs to earn some extra cash!
Joining Student Societies:
Now is the perfect time to join student societies and take on leadership roles in projects and initiatives. You can find a comprehensive list of all the societies the university offers here.
Connect with these societies on social media and apply for committee positions. It is a fantastic way to network with like-minded people and get involved in projects that will sharpen your transferable skills.
Volunteering:
Volunteering is more than just a way to contribute—it’s a meaningful step towards your Stellify Award as well.
It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and gain experience beyond the classroom. Volunteering helps you build essential transferable skills like collaboration, time management, adaptability, networking, multitasking, and organisational skills—skills that will serve you well in any career you pursue.
Along the way, you’ll meet new friends, make a positive impact in your community, and take a well-deserved break from your academic routine to do something truly rewarding. Ready to make a difference? Start your journey with Find Volunteering today!
Insight Days and Internships:
Your second year is an ideal time to apply for insight days and summer internships. With so many opportunities available, keeping track of deadlines can be challenging. I found it helpful to use an Excel spreadsheet to record the opportunities I was interested in, including deadlines, application details, and outcomes. This approach helped me stay organized and identify areas where my applications needed improvement.
If you’re unsure about which career path aligns with your skills and interests or need advice on improving your applications, consider booking a one-on-one appointment with a Humanities Careers Consultant.
As you dive into this exciting year, remember that the University of Manchester is brimming with opportunities just waiting for you to seize. Whether you’re polishing your resume, exploring new part-time jobs, joining societies, or giving back through volunteering, every step you take brings you closer to your goals.
