Uma Kothari presented a paper at the Inaugural Critical Tourism Studies Asia-Pacific Conference at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 3-6 March 2018. This cutting-edge conference brought together leading academics and practitioners to critically address contemporary issues in tourism.

Uma’s paper, entitled ‘Colonial Imaginaries and Postcolonial Representations of Travel and Tourism’, takes an historical perspective and a postcolonial approach to interrogate how colonial imaginaries continue to shape contemporary representations of travel and tourism. It builds on some of the key themes emerging from the ESRC-DFID Development Frontiers ‘Everyday Lives’ project.

Critical Tourism Studies-Asia Pacific (CTS-AP) is an international, interdisciplinary network for academics, community members and tourism professionals. CTS-AP facilitates networking opportunities, the exchange of ideas and research, and other forms of collaboration.
