Student experience internships
During the summer we recruit interns to help us prepare for welcoming our new students. The interns help us with all aspects of administration and are on hand during Welcome Week to help students select their course units and help them find their way around. We offer the internships in partnership with the University Careers Service every year to students in their second/penultimate year of study.
Here are a few words from Alienor, one of our interns to give you an insight into what its like:
“Last year, I received an email about Student Experience Internship opportunities. I thought there’d be no harm in trying, and, a few months later, found myself walking through the empty Samuel Alexander Building as that summer’s Student Communications and Welcome Week Intern. The other interns arrived a few weeks later.
We were warmly welcomed, and quickly gained better understanding of how the University works as a whole. The staff were open to our student suggestions, and regularly checked that we were happy with our workload. While all internships are different, the people I worked with were incredibly understanding, and encouraged me to pursue the areas I was interested in. For instance, I was curious about graphic design. Thanks to their resourcefulness, I was introduced to the University’s graphic design team, and worked on the Welcome Week templates.
As Welcome Week approached and the campus was swarmed with students, more administrative help was needed. The other interns and I spent most of that time enrolling students. The office was often very busy, however we all improved in communication, media and teamwork skills. By the end of the week we were given cards and champagne as a celebratory farewell. We drank to the internship, already nostalgic it was over.”
