SALC at the Big Volunteer Day

Thank you to everyone who took part in Student Volunteering Week! The University’s Big Volunteer Day in particular was a huge success, with 145 students helping to clean up an area in Ardwick before helping to plant hedges and over 1,000 bulbs. 

SALC was well-represented at the event, with a walking bus of students heading to the event together from the Samuel Alexander building. This provided some support for anyone who might be a bit daunted about turning up to a large event on their own and was a great opportunity for SALC students to get to know each other.

The Student Experience team would like to use walking buses before other events to bring groups of students together so, if you think a walking bus would be good for an event you are interested in, please contact us via salcstudents@manchester.ac.uk.

These days are organised by the Volunteering Team and are a great opportunity to try out volunteering. Transport is usually provided as well as hoodies, waterproofs and wellies with support from a member of the University’s Volunteering Team. Volunteer Day: Copperas Field Conservation Day – Tuesday 25 February

University of Manchester students have volunteered here for a number of years; helping to lay paths, clear a site for an adventure playground and planting new trees. This is your chance to get involved in the next stage of the site’s development. Tasks could include anything from hedge-laying and coppicing to fencing and general maintenance. Get down and boogie with thousands of woman and men, walking an overnight marathon in decorated bras, raising lots of money for breast cancer! Trafford Citizen Forester at Wellacre, Wednesday 26th February, 10am-2pm.

Join City of Trees at Wellacre Country Park to help with habitat management and site maintenance. Sessions take place 10am – 2pm; gloves, tools and equipment provided. Quarry Bank Exhibition Volunteer

The National Trust are seeking a team of passionate exhibition volunteers to help bring a 6 month exhibition ‘A Healthy Profit’ to life for their visitors. The exhibition will explore how the workers at Quarry Bank experienced health and illness, accident or injury, pregnancy and childbirth. What was the physical, mental and emotional experience of losing a finger, of suffering from cotton lung, of returning to work days after giving birth? iNostalgia is a small publishing organisation based in Manchester, which encompasses books, newspaper articles, social media, marketing, online publishing and legacy-building for communities of interest. They require a Social Media Marketing Assistant to assist with things such as researching captions, helping to post and analyse social media, liaising with writers/publishers and local interest groups and helping to maintain the website, twitter, Facebook, etc.

Booth Centre Volunteer – Activities and Day Centre for Homeless People

Volunteers are involved in many things like helping to prepare and serve hot food (they provide 800 meals a week), cafe assistants, helping with activities such as music cafe, internet cafe, job club, quiz, arts & crafts, bingo, gardening and maintaining the building. Biodiversity Officer – Platt Fields Park

The Platt Fields Park committee are looking for new members, including a biodiversity officer! We are looking for volunteers to join Team Rwanda Summer 2020. Apply now!

This fully funded flagship international volunteering project, exclusively for students from The University of Manchester, is a partnership project between the University and Azizi Life, a social enterprise that works with local artisans, supporting community development from the grass roots up.

This year, there will be three team projects. Each team will focus on a different area of Azizi Life’s work, volunteering alongside students from the University of Rwanda:

  • Storytelling through media
  • Community research and data analysis
  • Business and enterprise development

The team will consist of a Team Leader, 14 Team Members and 8 Rwandan volunteers.

The project will take place from Saturday 18 July to Sunday 16 August 2020.
