Rethinking Research-Based Teaching in Undergraduate Education
Masterclass by Dr Kamil Zwolski
The literature on teaching and learning in Social Sciences indicates that this study area lends itself to pedagogical innovations, including problem-based teaching and simulations. This paper, on the one hand, contributes to the pedagogical literature by sharing the results of implementing the principles of research-based teaching methodology in an undergraduate module at a UK university. On the other hand, however, this paper challenges the idea that innovative methodologies, such as problem-based learning, should be adopted in the name of student-centred learning. Instead, the paper argues that a more balanced (hybrid) approach is more appropriate in the majority of the institutional contexts, in which traditional lectures should continue to coexist with student-led work.
