This study aimed to investigate the stresses experienced by young people who died by suicide that may be contributing to the rise in rates of suicide and self-harm in young people, particularly girls.

We extracted information on the antecedents of suicide on almost 600 suicides by young people from official investigations, mainly inquests. A range of previous and recent stresses were reported, including family mental illness and domestic violence, abuse, bereavement, bullying, exams or exam results, and self-harm; all were more common in girls.

The findings show the importance of a multiagency approach to prevention incorporating education, social care, health services and the third sector.
