New standard of proof for suicide at inquests in England and Wales

In May 2019, the Court of Appeal in England and Wales ruled that the determination of suicide at inquest should be based on a civil standard of proof (balance of probabilities), not a criminal standard (beyond reasonable doubt).
The implications of this ruling are discussed, including the possibility that this lower standard of proof may lead to a rise in suicide rates, and the public health benefits of highlighting new areas of priority for suicide prevention.
