The personality disorder patient pathway: service user and clinical perspectives
Flynn et al, 2019
Little is known about clinicians’ and service users’ views of care pathways for personality disorder. This qualitative study examined the perspectives of service users with a diagnosis of personality disorder on how services could be improved.
An online survey targeting service users and focus groups with clinicians revealed several areas of concern:
- diagnosis and understanding of personality disorder
- the absence of a clear care pathway
- access to psychological therapies
- staff training.
The study highlighted there is a need for care pathways to be defined, accessible and consistent, with improved access to psychological therapies as recommended by NICE, and accessible staff training.
