CARLA has just published a new audio podcast (with English subtitles), in which the members of the Indigenous hip hop group, Eskina Qom, from Argentina, talk about their music and experiences and anti-Indigenous racism. Two researchers from the CARLA project, Ana Vivaldi and Lorena Cañuqueo, provide historical context about the Qom (aka Toba) people in the Argentinian nation, describing the nineteenth-century Conquest of the Green Desert in which native peoples in the country were decimated and displaced. Many Qom, who inhabited the region known today as the Pampas of the Central Chaco, had no option but to migrate to the big cities. There are currently over 120,000 people in Argentina who identify as Qom (according to the 2010 census), many of whom live in the poorer neighbourhoods of urban centres such as Greater Buenos Aires, Formosa and Córdoba. The two brothers who make up Eskina Qom, Brian and Nahuel López, live in the Daviaxaiqui neighbourhood, of the town of Presidente Derqui, in the northern part Greater Buenos Aires. In the podcast they talk about their neighbourhood, its street corners, esquinas, from which the name Eskina Qom is derived, and their music, including their best-known album Rap Originario.
